Ahhh, The Sunshine State. Florida offers a welcoming environment for retirees, remote workers, and anyone looking for a sunnier lifestyle. With its warm weather, beautiful beaches, and no state income tax, the appeal is easy to understand.

Because of this, the number of people moving to Florida has never been greater. Of course, it has always been a top destination for retirees—but with the rise of remote work, many people are no longer waiting for retirement to enjoy Florida’s benefits.

If you're reading this, you probably already know about the perks—especially the tax savings. So let’s help you get started on your journey to domiciling in Florida and becoming an official resident.

A Few Important Notes Before We Begin

  • You can have multiple residences, but only one domicile. Your domicile is your true, permanent home—the place you intend to return to and remain. All other properties (even if used regularly) are considered secondary.

  • Establishing Florida domicile isn’t a single form or application. It’s about demonstrating clear, consistent intent—through both legal steps and lifestyle choices.

  • Florida is only half of the equation. You'll also need to properly sever ties with your former state (especially if it's a high-tax state like NY, NJ, or CA). This is where things get murky—and where most of the financial consequences lie. Documentation matters.

The Key Steps to Establish Florida Domicile

  • Own or rent a home in Florida. It’s the most obvious requirement, but critical.

  • Obtain a Florida driver’s license or ID. This is both a legal requirement and a key domicile indicator. The process is straightforward for most, and more info is available through Florida’s DMV.

  • Update your car insurance to Florida and register your vehicle. You’ll need a Florida license first, then updated insurance, and a VIN/odometer inspection before registering with the DMV.

  • Register to vote in Florida and cancel your previous state’s voter registration. Submit a Florida Voter Registration Application via mail or in person (yes, another DMV visit!).

  • File a Declaration of Domicile with your county’s Clerk of the Court. This legal document affirms your intent to make Florida your permanent residence. You can find your local clerk here.

  • File for Florida’s Homestead Exemption. If you own your Florida home and occupy it as of January 1, apply by March 1. This exemption helps with property taxes and supports your domicile claim. You can see an overview here.

  • Spend more time in Florida than in your former state. Day counts matter—especially in audits. Use a tracking app like TaxBird to automate this.

  • Update your mailing address across all accounts: USPS, banks, brokerages, health insurance, credit cards, IRS (Form 8822), etc.

  • Find new professionals and providers in Florida: doctors, lawyers, accountants, dentists, etc.

  • Update your estate plan with a Florida attorney. Even though Florida doesn’t have an estate tax, state-specific laws (especially for homestead and spousal rights) may require updates to your will or trust.

  • Get involved in your Florida community. Vote in local elections, join clubs, volunteer, and settle into your new lifestyle. Even small things—like donating to local charities—can reinforce your intent.

  • Move your safe deposit box to Florida. It’s a subtle but important sign that your most valued documents and assets are now stored in your home state.

Final Thoughts

This list is not exhaustive, but it’s a solid foundation for anyone serious about establishing Florida residency. For more personalized guidance, especially if your former state is aggressive with residency audits, consult a qualified Florida tax attorney or accountant.

And most importantly…

🏖️ Kick back and relax on the beach—you’re officially on your way to becoming Florida’s newest resident.
